SWAMI CHINMAYANANDA JI

"To love and to serve is the essence of life; to know and to realize is the purpose of life." — Swami Chinmayanandaji

Swami Chinmayanandaji (1916–1993), born as Balakrishna Menon, affectionately known as Gurudev, was a brilliant, dynamic, and fearless young man who later blossomed into one of India’s most revered spiritual masters. Educated under the British system, he obtained degrees in literature and law from Lucknow University and began his career as a courageous journalist with The National Herald in Delhi.

Deeply moved by the hollowness he saw in the lives of the wealthy, he was driven by an intense longing to discover the deeper truths of existence. Though initially skeptical, his journalistic quest led him to Swami Sivananda’s ashram in Rishikesh with the intention to know and understand more about holy men. However, the divine compassion and luminous presence of Swami Sivananda melted his skepticism and awakened within him a deep thirst for spiritual knowledge. In 1949, he was initiated into the sacred monastic order and given the name Swami Chinmayanandaji. Under the loving but rigorous guidance of Swami Tapovan Maharaj in the serene Himalayas, he immersed himself in the profound study of the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the timeless wisdom of Vedanta.

The later part of his life was wholly dedicated to disseminating the sublime knowledge of Advaita Vedanta across India and the world. By delivering discourses in simple and lucid English, he made the lofty teachings of Vedanta accessible to the modern, educated minds of the nation. As his spiritual radiance grew, so did the numbers of devoted seekers who gathered to hear him. Some among them, moved by his divine mission, expressed a wish to create a formal structure for his tireless work, and thus was born the Chinmaya Mission. Through Gita Jnana Yajnas, the establishment of Bala Vihars for children, Chinmaya Yuva Kendra for youth, Vanaprastha Sansthans for elders, and Sandeepany Sadhanalayas for seekers, he tirelessly worked to touch every segment of society with the light of Vedantic knowledge. In 1989, he founded the Chinmaya International Foundation to serve as a living bridge between past and present, East and West, science and spirituality. His grand vision culminated posthumously in the establishment of Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth in 2016, a university dedicated to preserving and promoting Indian wisdom traditions. With boundless compassion, unwavering faith, and a heart blazing with the light of Knowledge, Swami Chinmayanandaji reinvigorated the ancient spiritual heritage of India, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire countless souls on the path to Truth.
